11 year old hacker creates malicious iPhone 1.1.3 installer

By Jonathan Schlaffer

brick It’s never too early to start your hacking career and a certain aspiring 11 year old hacker decided to cut his teeth on the iPhone.  It is alleged that he created the file for the sole purpose of essentially "bricking" iPhones.

The file was located at JMCO source, jmwiki.com which had a file called 1.1.3 prep installer that added an app installer which appears to be an update for some of the utilities.

When run all it does is display "shoes" and proceeds to delete many files that make the iPhone and its associated applications function.  Most of the files removed are located in the /bin directory on the iPhone.

The list of things it messes with can be found at ModifyMyiFone:

  • Erica’s Utilities
  • OpenSSH
  • Launcher
  • Doom

This 11 year old "hacker" won’t be hurting anyone else as the ISP was notified who contacted his father, the site and said file have been taken down.

It’s not clear how many, if anyone, was actually affected by this.

I hope his dad belted him one.

I agree, but it will also teach all those people trying to get 1.1.3 to wait for apple to release it. If you tread in the back alleys looking for bootleg stuff, expect to get burned once in a while.
