Slingplayer hitting iPhone / iPod Touch?
By Danny Mendez
When you look at the iPhone’s screen, wouldn’t Slingplayer functionality be one of the first things to come to mind? Apparently not, but now that we’re in 2008, expect it to happen.
According to an "extremely senior source at Sling" who spoke to electripig.tv, "iPhone and iPod Touch are OS X devices, and we can write OS X apps with our eyes closed. It’s coming."
What about release dates, beta programs, etc? Nothing’s set in stone, but the iPhone development kit should hit by February. With Slingplayer being a "legitimate" company, it’s unlikely to release anything on Installer.app, the iPhone / iPod Touch 3rd party program repository put together and maintained by hackers and developers.
Unfortunately, an EDGE data connection won’t do the trick. It’s possible Slingplayer will require a Wi-Fi connection, but the source admits the 3G iPhone will make a much better candidate for TV streaming. "[F]or now," he said, "the iPod touch could end up being the best way to use Slingplayer."
Perhaps it’s not so much that the iPod Touch would make a better player, but that its users wouldn’t try to connect over EDGE. Consumers aren’t always the smartest of bunch, and it’s likely many won’t like the program if it doesn’t work over AT&T’s 2G network.
