MacWorld: iPod Touch 1.1.3 update includes new apps, for a price
By Jonathan Schlaffer
My colleague, Danny Mendez wrote about the iPhone 1.1.3 update and the features it brings to the iPhone. It shouldn’t come as any surprise that the same update is available to iPod Touch users but at a cost of $19.99.
Owners of older generation iPod Touch units can get the 1.1.3 update at no charge but must "buy" the version of the update that includes the five new apps, Mail, Maps, Weather, Stocks and Notes. Both the free and "premium" update that includes the new apps are available from iTunes.
Like the iPhone, the iPod Touch can attempt to triangulate your location using nearby WiFi stations but more often than not, won’t work, it’s still a nice feature when it does work.
You can also rearrange your icons, customize the dock and have two home screens, all arranged to your liking.
The problem comes when you try to install the update, some people have reported that the new apps are not installing and one of our very own editors is having issues with it.
The installation, from what I can gather must be done in a specific order for it to work correctly. And, even then it may be hit or miss.
Here are some tips to help things go as smoothly as possible…
Sign into your iTunes account and make sure the computer is authorized
Download and Buy the 1.1.3 update (only buy it if you are interested in the new apps)
Attempt Apple’s instructions
If those don’t work and they didn’t for me
Then Restore your iPod and try Syncing until it works
It took me a few tries before it decided to install the applications and this is by far the very worst job I have seen from Apple, the update isn’t easy and flawless but, for the time being, I’m willing to toss that up to problems with an early release.
Or, it could just be that Apple doesn’t really want current iPod Touch users to get the new apps and would rather have us all just buy new iPod Touch units which come with the new apps and firmware installed from the factory.
