Turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a wireless touchpad for your PC or Mac
By Jonathan Schlaffer
The iPhone and iPod Touch are like fine wines, they just keep getting better with time. More uses are found for them every day and here’s something that I didn’t even think of. It’s now possible to use them as a wireless touchpad for your PC or Mac.
You will need a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch with Installer.app installed. On your PC or Mac you will need VNC installed on the machine you wish to control. According to the developer you will also need to edit the sources of Installer.app for it to function correctly.
Touchpadiphone has all the instructions. After following them you will be able to use your iPhone or iPod Touch as a wireless touchpad. All the normal functions of a touchpad, click, doubleclick, drag and drop and even scroll, are included.
Mac users should follow these instructions.
The only question is, what’s next for these devices. I’m sure that orientation sensor they have could be put to other uses. Apple should consider including the wireless touchpad functionality in future models, I can see that being very useful for some people.
Of course, jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch comes with risks which may require you to try several times or having to restore it through iTunes.

I’m sure a legal coming as soon as legitimate programs can be purchased through the iTunes store. I’ve always thought that the “universal remote” problem will be solved through such a device that can be targeted to various devices through plug-ins to the software. It’s a business waiting to happen with the ability to expand functionality to “preview” data in the other direction, such as broadcast schedules and document or program content.
