iPhone/iPod Touch 2.0 firmware due by June

By Jonathan Schlaffer

iPhone/iPod Touch 2.0 firmware due by June Here’s something you can sink your teeth into.  Apple is preparing iPhone firmware version 2.0 and will be making it available as a free updated by the end of June.  It has already been released as a beta to “select” developers and enterprise customers.

Usually where there’s an iPhone update there is also an iPod Touch update.  The iPhone 2.0 firmware includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync; making it more attractive to business customers.

According to the press release,

“Apple has licensed Exchange ActiveSync from Microsoft and is building it right into the iPhone, so that iPhone will connect out-of-the-box to Microsoft Exchange Servers 2003 and 2007 for secure over-the-air push email, contacts, calendars and global address lists. Built-in Exchange ActiveSync support also enables security features such as remote wipe, password policies and auto-discovery.”

The iPhone 2.0 software will also include a new feature called the “App Store” that will allow users to download and install third party applications to the device.  With the App Store description, Apple includes specific mention of the iPod Touch; this leads me to believe that the 2.0 firmware will be released for both.

It also includes the ability to view PowerPoint, Word and Excel documents as well as the capability to mass delete and move emails.  The update will be free for iPhone users; however, for full functionality, iPod Touch users must purchase the 2.0 update.

Depending on the products available when the firmware is released, it may be wiser (but not cheaper) to buy a new iPod Touch which will probably include all the new features.

Great - will have to give them more money to use my ipod properly thieving *****!

i have spent nearly 10000 on apple products in the last 7 years and still they want 20 bucks for me to use my ipod.

they should just introduce a 20$ a year international ipod tax and be done with it!

I’m absolutely stoked about this firmware update. my 32 GB Touch has been wonderful. agreed battery life could be better on movies, but the UI is pristine.

the President & COO of my company saw my personal touch and asked me to set them up with a new PDA (since we are on Verizon). that says a lot about how sleek it looks and how great it feels.

    7. Z-man:

I have been a loyal user of the ipod since gen 1. I bought an ipod touch with the hopes that it will replace my pda that broke. With regret, I am very disappointed in how Apple has handled the Touch. Outside of displaying great pictures and having a pretty cool interface, it does nothing for me. I can’t sync email, search my contacts folder, read PDFs, etc….

I am ordering a new iPaq today.

    8. wii819:

Z-Man are you retarded! You can read PDF’s on the ipod touch, you can hook it up with your email, you can put contacts on it and it can do more than some shity $150 PDA!

    9. Pissed off man:

the iPod touch really pissed me off some times the freakin old safari barely works

    10. A guy.:

Safari dose work, It just depends on how fast and how good your wireless is.

    11. Kieran:

whenever i go on safari it crashes why cant they use opera or mozilla on a ipos touch :S:S
