AT&T CEO thinks it’s a secret, says 3G iPhone coming in “months”
By Danny Mendez
AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega thinks he just let loose a super, subtle secret. All AT&T devices — including the iPhone — will go 3G in the not-too-distant future, says the highly informed boss. What’s most amusing about this incident isn’t that he believes it’s a secret but rather the manner he delivered the "secret".
During a lunch with the AT&T CEO, tech blog Gizmodo says PC Magazine’s Sascha Segan asked the man about the 3G iPhone after he mentioned that all AT&T devices will be 3G compatible within a few months.
Vega responded, "Let me repeat what I said: I think that you’re going to see our integrated devices be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months. That should be clear enough."
In other words, the 3G iPhone — along with the rest of AT&T’s 3G lineup — will hit stores sometime in 2008. Wow, nothing new. Let’s take a look at some of the more obvious clues pointing to the release of Apple’s 3G mobile in 2008. Thanks for the secret, Ralphy!
- There was that incident in September when Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, "You can expect a 3G iPhone later next year." That’s pretty clear if you ask us, we can’t imagine why Vega would think it’s a secret.
- In December, after hearing form a "very good source" with connections to Asian manufacturers, CNBC’s Jim Goldman said the iPhone will hit sometime during May or June of 2008.
- Oh yeah, there was that other incident with that other AT&T CEO.
