3G iPhone to offer optional 2G mode
By Danny Mendez
A developer has uncovered a hidden option in the latest iPhone 2.0 beta firmware to disable or enable 3G. Current models hide the option for obvious reasons, but the 3G iPhone is likely to take advantage of the feature.
Chronic Productions, an iPhone developer, uncovered the feature which is hidden by default, says MacRumors, who confirmed the news. Though, you should keep in mind the 2.0 firmware is in beta, so anything can change before the final release including the removal or refinement of the feature.
More recently, Apple updated the iPhone 2.0 beta firmware adding two warning strings in the event that a user tries to turn 3G on or off during a call.
- "Disabling 3G will end your phone call. Are you sure you want to disable 3G?"
- "Enabling 3G will end your phone call. Are you sure you want to enable 3G?"
Since these strings seem to have been added after the discovery of the hidden 3G menu, it seems Apple is refining the 3G experience on its soon-to-be-released handset. It’s also apparent Apple is really staying true to its commitment of offering a single OS for both (or all 3 — including iPod Touch) devices.
The 3G iPhone looks to be coming together pretty nicely. The second version is really what the first should’ve been, which is just the first model with 3G, installable apps, real GPS, and an official SDK. Oh well, better late than never.
