iPhone 3G in-store activation only, no GoPhone plan
By Jonathan Schlaffer
For anyone who was hoping to pre-order the iPhone 3G or order it online and have it shipped to their door and activate it at home, think again. You will need to head out to your local Apple or AT&T store to pick up the iPhone 3G.
The iPhone 3G will be using AT&Ts standard voice and data plans which is $30 unlimited data for consumers and $45 for business users. You will not be able to activate the iPhone at home, it must be done in store which will take 10 to 12 minutes.
AT&T says the network will be ready on the day of the launch even if the supply of phones isn’t. The last tidbit of news that Gizmodo provided was AT&T seems to have dropped the GoPhone plan for the iPhone 3G.
It seems likely that Apple plans to provide free updates to iPhone 3G users despite lacking the previous revenue-sharing deal with AT&T like it did with the last iPhone.
For users of current iPhones, the 2.0 firmware update will be free but iPod Touch users must buy it through iTunes.
I can understand why Apple charges iPod Touch users for the latest updates but we don’t happily pay for the update, we or rather I grudgingly pay because I must have it and I like my iPod Touch. Not having the latest update would be like if you bought a car but had to pay extra if you wanted to be able to fill the gas tank 100% full as opposed to just 3/4 full. An iPod Touch without the update is only 3/4 full and I’m not okay with that.
