iPhone to hit Best Buy and Radio Shack?

Rumours are that you won’t need to queue up overnight outside an Apple store for an iPhone – Best Buy and Radio Shack just might stock them too.
The good news came out on Mobile Magazine’s blogs. Don’t get too excited, though. It’s just rumour at the moment and neither store chain has come out to announce iPhone availability. Still, Apple hasn’t exactly said that the new iPhone 3G will only be available from Apple and AT&T stores, just that they would be in stock there.
As both stores already stock Apple goodies and AT&T phones, it would make a good fit to add these retail marts to the list. Hey, why not make the iPhone available to whoever wants it? Makes better business sense and it would probably help beat the frenzy that Apple fanboys will get into. We all still remember last year’s queues and obsessed iPhone desirers.
But the publicity of last year’s obsessed and unwashed probably appeals to the Apple hype-machine so it’s likely that Best Buy and Radio Shack will get their iPhone 3G stocks…later.
Americans should probably feel blessed to get their phones before most people in the world. Negotiations are still going on in China and the Canadians are all in a tizzy over Rogers’s rates for the iPhone. The iPhone hype and buzz is probably going to continue until the phones actually get into the hands of buyers in huge quantities.
Will the iPhone now become a phone for the masses? Perhaps not until more people get the hang of using it – the recent Sex and the City movie made it a bit of an in-joke where the characters, when handed one, were totally incapable of using one to make calls. Let’s hope all those iPhone buyers are smarter than Samantha or Carrie.
