AT&T reveals price plans, offers contract-less iPhones
AT&T’s giving their customers an option to purchase an iPhone without a contract, but at a hefty price.
IDG reported AT&T’s revealed that they will offer the iPhone, sans contract at an undisclosed date. The iPhone 3G for customers with contracts will drop as scheduled July 11.
Prices for the contract-less iPhone? US$599 for an 8GB device and $699 for a 16GB. This is certainly an interesting move by AT&T, considering that previously no one could buy an iPhone without a two-year contract. But unlocked phones would probably be a bit too much to ask from the telco, who will likely lock the phones.
AT&T’s also announced the details of the four plans it will offer for the iPhone 3G. The cheapest plan will go for $69.99 per month, for 450 anytime minutes and 5,000 night and weekend minutes while the most expensive is $129.99 per month for unlimited anytime minutes. All plans will have unlimited data included, but texts are not included.
Some bad news for AT&T customers – the $199 price won’t apply to everyone. Only people who bought the iPhone before July 11, new customers (or requesting a new liine) and those eligible for an upgrade discount qualify.
Other AT&T customers will have to pay $399 for an 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB one.
AT&T customers eligible for an upgrade will be charged an upgrade fee of $18 instead of the $36 new AT&T customers pay. Those who bought an iPhone after May 27 will also pay a small restocking fee to swap for the 3G version. But they will need to sign a new two-year contract under the 3G iPhone plan. And of course, they’ll need to activate the phones at an AT&T store.
