Got cash? It can’t buy you an iPhone 3G, but there’s a loophole

By Danny Mendez

Got Cash? Yeah? It can't buy you an iPhone 3GGot cash? Stick it in a bank ’cause it’s not good for an iPhone 3G. In order to speed up the check-out process at Apple retail stores, the company will only be accepting plastic forms of payment on Friday for the second-generation iPhone’s release.

The iPhone 3G is set for release on July 11, 2008 — AKA “this Friday” — and the fruit company expects the usual rush of first adopters that accompanies any new Apple product release. However, when it comes to the mobile phone world, Apple’s customers tend to get a little more excited.

That’s why Apple plans to use the handheld EasyPay system to handle iPhone 3G sales on Friday, though, this will be the only way to buy an iPhone at Apple retail stores. As a result, the forms of payment that will be accepted for an iPhone 3G are credit cards, debit cards, and, of course, Apple gift cards.

If you recently lost your debit card, there’s a loophole… kind of. You can still purchase gift cards using the traditional register systems at the store with cash, and, like I mentioned earlier, you can use that card to purchase an iPhone 3G. But if you don’t want to deal with all that, just take your business elsewhere.

Once you’re done buying your unit, an Apple employee will activate your iPhone 3G in-store. After that, it’s all yours.
