1st person to own an iPhone 3G is a loser, in New Zealand, called Jonny
By Dave Parrack
The iPhone 3G is barely days away, and the level of anticipation amongst Apple fanboys is getting slightly out of hand. The activities of some over the past week also show that hardcore iPhone junkies don’t seem to have a life. Cue Jonny from New Zealand…
I’m not a big Apple fan. This is no secret, and I’ve written a few articles across the Blorge network showing my lack of devotion to the cult of Steve Jobs. I do however think that the iPhone is a nice bit of kit, and have followed its development from the start. And now here we are, on the precipice of the launch of iPhone 2, or iPhone 3G as the official, and rather lacklustre title.
As expected, this new model has invoked widespread pant-wetting amongst those of you out there who worship the ground that Steve Jobs walks on. But as nice as the new iPhone may be, does it warrant quite the level of dedication needed to stand out in the rain and queue for days?
We’ve already seen a group of sad individuals queueing outside the flagship Apple Cube in New York, a week before the iPhone 3G even goes on sale. It seems they may not be Macheads though, but simply a bunch of do-gooders with a mission to gain publicity from the launch. And using a baby to do so.
And now we have Jonny Gladwell, who according to Engadget, is set to be the first person in the world to lay his hands on a 3G iPhone. The reason he is set to be first isn’t because he’s special, although some would argue that he is in some ways, but because he is from Auckland in New Zealand, which is the first iPhone-selling country to reach 00:01 on July 11th, which is when the new model goes on sale.
That still doesn’t explain what can possibly be gained from camping outside a mobile phone shop for a week though, as other people in Auckland will be able to just casually walk in to the Vodafone store later that day and buy an iPhone. Which leads me to think Jonny’s just doing it to get his name and face on websites around the world. Damn, I’ve just helped him in his cause.
