iPhone 2.0.1 update fixes myriad bugs

By Erna Mahyuni

iPhone 2.0.1 update fixes myriad bugs

Apple released its latest firmware update for the iPhone, release 2.0.1. The update will be usable for the iPhone, iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch. Apple did not elaborate much on the update besides saying that it contains “bug fixes”. Way to go, Captain Obvious.

The firmware’s availability quickly became news on sites like Macworld and ZDNet. ZDNet’s Jason D. O’Grady got some flak for originally titling his blogpost on the topic as “Apple drops iPhone 2.0.1 update” leading to confusion among the masses – did Apple release a new update or scrap plans for the update instead? Though to be fair, ZDNet probably was the first to blog the news so we’ll forgive O’Grady his excitement.

Speaking of excitement, is the 2.0.1 update anything to shout about? Well, the 249MB update does fix a few things but supposedly breaks some as well. Sites warned that attempting to update the iPhone while in airplane mode will render the iPhone unusable. Say hello to your new iBrick. The update also renders the recently unveiled Pwnage Tool jailbreak software useless. Not to worry, its developers are probably already hard at work to resolve that.

For a more thorough guide to installing your new update than Apple provided, head on over to the site iPhone Atlas where it has some useful troubleshooting tips. iPhone Atlas also claims the update’s resulted in more responsiveness from the keyboard, shortened Contacts lag as well as faster backups. No sign of that elusive ‘copy and paste’ feature as yet, but then Apple has designated that one as ‘low priority’.

You’d think that Apple would at least try to document the updates better. Perhaps it would do well to take a cue from Blizzard’s patch notes which detail even the most insignificant of fixes. But for those of you who would rather just update already, just connect your i-Whatever to your PC, fire up iTunes and get downloading. A note to iPod Touch users – you’ll need to use the Update button or just click on the “Check for Update” command in the iTunes Store menu.
