The fate of the first 1 million 3G iPhones sold worldwide

By Dave Parrack

The fate of the first 1 million 3G iPhones sold worldwideThe Apple iPhone 3G went on sale on July 11th and immediately sold out in most of the 22 countries it was initially made available in. Just 3 days later, Apple announced that it had sold 1 million iPhones worldwide, but what was the fate of those first 1 million?

New Zealander Jonny Gladwell was the first person in the world to get his hands on a 3G iPhone, but since it went on sale, another 1 million people and counting have been lucky enough to get their hands on one. Demand was such that AT&T Stores in the US were still struggling to get enough stock to fulfil orders a week after launch.

Medialets reported today about a Goldman Sachs research paper which charted where the first 1 million 3G iPhones went on sale. The data also shows which carriers are doing the best out of the new iPhone.

First 1 Million iPhones

The US came out on top by a huge margin, which isn’t surprising considering the size of the market in the States, the fact that it is Apple’s home country, and that having an iPhone is actually more affordable in the US than most other countries.

Japan, Germany, and France come in next, with Apple managing to shift around 70,000 units in each of these three countries. Overall, 4 of the 22 countries where the 3G iPhone went on sale on July 11th made up 81% of total unit sales.

Due to AT&T being the only carrier in the US, it is miles ahead of the pack in terms of sales by carrier. T-Mobile is the overseas leader, with 89,000 units sold in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. Orange comes next with 77,000 units sold collectively in France, Belgium, and Switzerland. Japan’s exclusive carrier Softbank comes next with 70,000 units sold.

This data is interesting to see but obviously only covers a very short space of time since the 3G iPhone went on sale. More interesting still will be the data in a few months time which shows how far and wide the iPhone craze has managed to travel.

Actually kinda surprising the Hong Kong numbers are so low. Intentionally limited by Apple? Aren’t we finding that most “unlocked” 3G iPhones are actually funneling through HK?

    2. Casey:

How about a per capita breakdown of the sales figures?

That would be more interesting than raw data.
