3D application for iPod Touch is likely fake

By Jonathan Schlaffer

3D application for iPod Touch is likely fake There are a lot of fantastic hopes out there for the iPod Touch/iPhone but some of them just don’t seem plausible.  This is one such application.

How would you like to be able to view holograms on your iPod Touch?  An application called iHologram claims to produce that effect.  The video shows what appears to be a 3D image jumping off the display.

Many are calling fake.  Since the application is not yet available for download then there is no saying for certain but it doesn’t seem very likely.

PC Monitors have to be designed specifically for the purpose of producing the 3D effect.  And yet here is some application that claims to produce the same effect on an iPhone or iPod using just video/optical illusions.

It’s very difficult to say whether this is for real or not but based on what I know I’m calling fake until it shows up in the App Store and I can test it for myself.

There are several comments on Digg which question the authenticity of the application.

SurrealDream writes,

I’m confused, how did the phone know the angle of rotation relative to the camera? I understand that he can spin the image by swiping the screen, so he could have set the original orientation to be facing the camera, however on a flat table the accelerometer wouldn’t be able to distinguish the rotating motion that accurately, would it?

Don’t get me wrong, not knocking the app. It looks awesome, I just wanna know how that’s done!

That’s just it, it looks awesome and that’s probably it.

Tim Moynihan posted a comment on the developer’s website,

Great video, but definitely a fake. the iPhone’s motion sensors do not respond to one-plane rotation like he performs in the video.

For example, load a web page on the iPhone, place the phone on a table, and rotate the phone without lifting it from the table. the web page will not rotate to adjust to single-axis movements.

Also, at no point in the video does he place his hand between the camera and the "hologram." if he did, keeping the illusion intact would have required more extensive post-production work than overlaying the animation on the iPhone screen and applying perspective effects to the project.

i dont think it is an hologram , but more of an optical illusion which makes it appear to pop out of the ipod/iphone.

you guys are dumb, thats real. if you knew what anamorphics were, you would know that it is real. and ipod touch and iphone both have a sensor that senses your spin.
