More people surf the Web on Motorola's Razr than iPhone

A recent survey found that more users surf the Web on Razr mobile phones than on the iPhone. Hardly surprising – the iPhone may be the current ‘it’ phone but Motorola’s Razr line is still outselling it, at least in the U.S.

Where does the data come from? A company called AdMob, whose latest survey was highlighted by InformationWeek’s Eric Zeman. AdMob’s in the business of mobile Web advertising, making it a point to collect and make sense of mobile phone surfing data. It claims to see ad requests from more than 5,000 sites in more than 160 countries and releases the data in its AdMob Mobile Metrics Report. The report covers manufacturer, device and country-specific data on AdMob’s top six markets, namely the US, UK, India, Indonesia, South Africa and the Philippines.

In the US, the Motorola RAZR and KRAZR are still leading the rest of the pack in mobile surfing. That seems surprising, considering that the browser on those phones aren’t nearly as full of bells and whistles as Apple’s iPhone. The reason behind that could, perhaps, be tied to carriers. Carriers in the US often customize their own mobile services, often rebranding already available mobile services by adding their own logos and then serving them in neat Web packages to sell with their plans.

It’s actually a very encouraging sign for carriers. Mobile phone users seem to be attracted to the whole notion of mobile surfing, despite, and not because of, the devices. Instead of putting all their hopes on super devices like the iPhone to make mobile surfing attractive, maybe more focus could be placed on improving mobile services. Encourage the creation of more mobile versions of popular sites – a way already paved by Yahoo, Google, Facebook and even Twitter.

But at least the iPhone still manages a decent placing where mobile phone surfing is concerned worldwide. It’s currently number four, behind the Motorola RAZR, Nokia N70 and the Motorola KRZR.
