Top 16 free apps for your iPod Touch

By Gareth Powell

Top 18 free apps for your iPod ClassicMy new iPod Touch has been delivered and it is being filled up with free programs. This is the first 16. More will follow as I research them. I am grateful I bought the 32GB version. Otherwise I would soon be running out of room.

This page is laid out as something of an experiment. The name of the program is in bold and it is linked visibly to the originating page although you may have to do a small search to get there. Any feedback, brickbats, bouquets welcomed.

Words per Minute Works out the number of words I can type on that screen in a minute. The answer is not fast and I still do not think screen typing is the answer but I have to get better. I guess practice makes perfect.

Body Mass Index Running and diet keeps you trim, taut and terrific. Not me. This reminds me that I should be trim, taut and terrific, want to be trim, taut and terrific. Instead of being a somewhat overweight slob.

Tetris Alexey Pajitnov wrote this in June 1985. Still fascinating.

Minesweeper There must be a logic to the opening moves of this game. I have never found it. Appears totally random.

iPhone Solitaire In the army a pack of cards was standard issue. If you were lost in the jungle you sat down and started playing Solitaire. Within five minutes some one would come up and say, ‘That King could go out.’ Never failed.

Golf Score Card Never played the game. But there is a links — technically the correct word — at the end of the street where I live in Sydney and the world is full of enthusiasts and the thought occurs I may join them.

ABC7 Eyewitness News See the news 24 hours a day on your iPod Touch or iPhone.

Truphone Make and receive Skype calls and instant messaging.

Aero Drum Not as exciting as beating an actual drum kit but good for relieving frustration.

Aero Guitar FreeTeaches you the basic of up strokes, down strokes and basic tapping. Not me, I am a klutz.

Calorie Tracker The free application allows you to track the foods you eat, the fitness activities you do while on the go.

Wi-Fi Finder With more WiFi areas opening every day, many of them free, this helps detect the nearest.

Idiom Dictionary Needed because PRs use idiom ridden English and sometimes you need help translating. It tells me that back burner means of less importance. Yes, I knew that one but not all. Did you know people space means the number of people needed to run a machine. Me neither. And that came from Hewlett-Packard.

eBay Mobile I buy a lot of stuff from eBay and this is a double handy way of knowing what is going on with my iPod is I am in a WiFi area. Which, quite a lot of the time, I am.

White Noise This is a little difficult to explain. When I travel the noise in the room when I am trying to go to sleep varies widely from silence to upload. So I have a White Noise machine which puts out a steady noise of, in my case, waves crashing. You need to experiment to get the right sound level to lull you to sleep and over-ride the other noises. And you need a loudspeaker. Earphones will not hack it. Luckily, loudspeakers are readily available for the iPod and this program gives you a choice of white noises. You may think this is white magic. Perhaps it is. But it works.

Lots more when I have assimilated this little lot.

Dude! You have an Ipod Touch not Clasic.
The Clasic comes as 120Gig. The touch is 32Gig and takes apps. You can only put click wheel games on the clasic.

Your iPod Classic is way cooler than mine! I won’t let me install any of these. I didn’t know they made a 32 GB model…

      Proof read much?

    3. RLS:

Given the 32GB version reference and some of the applications listed (e.g., WhiteNoise), I’m assuming you’re referring to a new iPod Touch not iPod Classic?

    4. Gareth Powell:

I am already in deep depression that I cannot get simple things right. It is iPod Touch not Classic as you so rightly pointed out. At 4.30 in the morning (Australian time) I corrected it and then went and hid under the back porch. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Sorry.

    5. John Pospisil:

Alls well that ends well Gareth. Life would be so much simpler if it was called the iTouch!

    6. ncaissie:

Yeah I love the touch. I have the 32gig and it rocks.
