iPhone/iPod Touch — practical protection from disaster
By Gareth Powell
If the iPhone/iPod Touch has a fault, it is the glass screen. My iPod has a cracked screen — It was not me, guv’nor, honest — and the cost of replacing it seems to be around US$300 which is rather more than one has in mind. Therefore furious thought to see if there is a way to better protect the screen. There appears to be none in Google so this is a one-off and anyone can steal the idea.
One: stick a sticky protective screen on. There must be a way of doing it without bubble but that seems a Bridge too Far. Anyone who knows how to do it tell us. You can use the machine perfectly well with a few bubbles but it would be better without.
Two. Get a protective casing. Some vulgar people buy orange and black striped case which is their taste and let us not be rotten about it. Although matte black looks far classier.
Three. Make a lanyard from a strong (nylon preferred) woven cord. You can get them most jewelry stores. Put on latex gloves. This is important. Now get some instant polymer superglue — the one with two components is the stronger — and stick the well frayed ends of the cord — bit spread out like a tree — about two thirds towards the top center of the case. Let it dry and test it with a few strong tugs when the iPod Touch is NOT in the container.
Four. Cut a piece of artificial leather in a mitred shape. Glue the bottom part of the case — don’t forget the latex gloves — under where the frayed ends had been stuck and let it dry.
It could be done a lot more neatly and cleverly but it works.
The loose end of the woven card goes around my belt. The iPod Touch goes in my trouser pocket. If it falls out it is held by the lanyard and strikes me neatly where I would not care to show the vicar. But that momentary pain seems to me to be a small price for an iPod Shape screen. No Google search has shown anything like it so write in if you know. In watch terms I think this was called an Albert. A nice name for a device that saves in iPod Touch screen. The illustration at the top, is an Albert.

the sticky covers work perfectly on my iPhone. to do it start very carefully in the corner and gently let the film down. use a credit card and carefully squeeze out the bubbles, but not too hard because it scratches the film. thats how its done.

Thanks. I am just about to buy a new film to apply and will use your method which sounds logical and simple enough even for a klutz like me.

I have no problem at all applying the sticky covers. Usually the film comes with a plastic applicator already but if not, using a credit card will be just fine. Work slow. I bought a case through Griffin and it came with one sheet of film. Two birds, one stone!
Good luck

I’m not always the most coordinated, but this can help alot.
This is one of the better brands of screen protectors available for the iPod. Many of the other screen accessories can be considered rather lackluster in my experiences.
Definately offers the best protection for your devices delicate screen, not just an accessory, its an investment.
