iPhone/Touch continue to hold net traffic lead

By Michael W. Jones

Iphone / Touch continue to hold net traffic leadThe Apple iPhone and its partner the iPod touch continue to generate the largest amount of IUnternet traffic of any mobile platforms by a significant margin, as calculated by AdMob.

These monthly results come from AdMob, the hosts of a mobile advertising network. Every time a mobile user opens a Web page that is part of the network, AdMob records that hit. It serves ads on 6,000 mobile Web sites and 1,000 applications around the world, so its statistics are a fairly reliable poll of mobile traffic on the internet.

The AdMob report ranks all mobile devices every month, based on the traffic generated during the prior month and include prior quarters and years. The latest report shows the following rankings at the top of the chart:

iPhone – 11.9 percent
iPod Touch – 6.7 percent
Motorola Razr – 2.9 percent

That’s right, the top two places go to Apple mobile devices, one of which is not even a cell phone. Combine the top two places, both occupied by Apple, and the two generate almost 6.5 times more traffic than the third-place Razr.

AdMob is also beginning to consider the smartphone as a distinct class of mobile device, defined as a device that runs a complete operating system, such as  iPhone OS,  Symbian, Windows Mobile or Android. AdMob says that smartphones continue to generate more mobile Internet access than regular phones, according to a Network World article. Over the last six months, smartphones have increased their share of mobile Internet access from 26 percent to 33 percent in February, this despite the horrible performance of the world economy.

Within this growing mobile segment, Apple continues to gain ground on their more venerable competitors. In this latest report, the iPhone is generating 33 percent of all traffic, still well behind the total of all phones running the Symbian OS, such as those produced by Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and Psion. There are, of course, a larger number of Symbian phones in use compared to a much smaller number of iPhones.

In recent months, since the introduction of the iPhone 3G, the Apple share of the smartphone marketplace has been growing rapidly. This trend continues. At this point, Apple is generating 33 percent of the smartphone internet traffic, while the next best single device is the Symbian-run Nokia N70, which has only 7.1 percent of the traffic.

Apple has simply invented the best mousetrap. It is easier to use than any of its competitors and has more screen real estate than almost any of the others. Users have taken to the iPhone in droves, especially considering the high price of the device. At the same time, the ease of use provided by both Apple devices are prompting more owners to use the internet more often, simply because it is so, well, simple to do.
