Skype coming to the iPhone [next week]

March 27, 2009

International phone and roaming charges getting your down? Relief might be just around the corner—a port of world’s best known and most widely used VOIP solution is expected to be announced at a tradeshow next week.

News.com reports that Skype, the Internet calling service owned by eBay, is likely to announce a version of their eponymous industry standard VOIP application for the iPhone at next week’s wireless CTIA tradeshow in Las Vegas.

Quite naturally, Skype itself has nothing to say about an upcoming announcement, though the company did say back in January at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that they were working on Skype for the iPhone and that the application would be available via the iTunes App Store “as soon as it’s perfect.” Well, given the unlikelihood of “perfection” and the needs of commerce, next week’s event seems as likely a venue as any.

That said, given how jealously Apple’s wireless partners guard their national franchises, it seems overwhelmingly likely that Skype service will be limited to Wi-Fi access only, which is the case for iPhone VOIP solutions already available, like Truphone (iTunes).
