The $99 refurbished iPhone returns

By Ronald O Carlson

Specials they and specials they go. Still, with contract-free iPhones already on sale and more on the way, plus the likely June release of a new Apple handset, every little move Cupertino and its partners will be highly scrutinized.

AT&T’s online store is once again offering refurbished iPhones. Purchase requires a two-year contract, though you likely will not get full warranty coverage—you get whatever is left since the original activation.

Still, if $100 off the retail price of an 8GB iPhone ($99) or 16GB ($199) is a better deal for you, now is the time to act because refurbs at the AT&T store generally don’t last long.

Head ‘em up, move ‘em out…

The news that refurbished iPhones are back is just the latest portent that Cupertino and its carrier partners are trying to clear existing stocks ahead of an anticipated June introduction and perhaps availability of new, faster product running iPhone OS 3.0.

Of course, AT&T has announced its intention to sell and Apple has already begun retailing unlocked handsets with the 8GB model tagged at $599 and 16GB for $699. No AT&T contract, no worries.

Are you in the market for a new or refurbished iPhone? We’ve never had more choices than we have right now…

What’s your take?
