Galaga Remixed: Classic ’80s game coming to the iPhone

April 5, 2009

A chance once again to waste all of that time, and have all that fun, all over again. Fortunately, this time around we won’t have to pay an endless succession of quarters to keep playing.

For lots of people over 35 years old, the coolest place to be on a Friday night during our formative years was just as likely the local arcade in the local mall. Although the mall’s probably still there, the arcade likely closed years ago, taking with it memories of our misbegotten youth and dozens of classic games.

Well, we will never get the thousands of quarters we “invested” in saving the galaxy, but it will soon be possible to once again play Galaga, a title that helped define the fixed shooter style combat game, on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Interestingly, the game’s Japanese creator, Namco, still owns the game and is porting Galaga to the iPhone. Further, Galaga, which was the sequel to Galaxian, was brought to the US market by Midway, another company that has morphed and transitioned its way through the ever changing game landscape since the 1950s and still exists today.
