Camera coming to the touch? Hallelujah!

By Ronald O Carlson

For many Apple fans, including this one, the idea of paying AT&T $70 plus taxes every month for a “phone” just isn’t going to happen. Moreover, the oft repeated description of the iPod touch as “everything good about the iPhone without AT&T” really resonates with quite a few.

One of the more reliable leading indicators for new products and features brewing in the bowels at 1 Infinite Loop is the list of skilled people Apple’s trying to hire. Right now, according to News.com, the company’s advertising for iPhone camera design, validation and project engineers, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

However, as is oft the case, the rich satisfying nougat (ie the detailed job descriptions) is where the truly interesting bits were unveiled:

The iPhone Engineering Group is looking for a Camera Engineering Project Manager (EPM) to drive the design, development and integration of camera modules across iPhone and iPod. The EPM is the interface between our internal engineering teams and the suppliers of sensors, lenses and camera modules.

Whether the original posting was a slip of the tongue or a genuine mistake by Apple’s human resources people, the mothership has since changed the verbiage used in the ad and the reference to “iPod” has been expurgated.

So, just a little slip up or is Apple trying to cover its future product planning tracks? Either way we likely won’t know until the company’s traditional September iPod refresh just ahead of the Christmas shopping season.

Personally, I’d love to see an iPod touch with a camera, and GPS too if the price was right. Then it would truly be everything great about the iPhone without “_insert soulless, grasping wireless carrier here_.”

Assuming, Apple doesn’t lose its mind when pricing such a device, the elapsed time between the announcement of an iPod touch with a camera, and when I click “buy” will be measurable in nanoseconds…

What’s your take?
