Monitor your Mac’s vital statistics with iStat for iPhone

By Ronald O Carlson

Yesterday, the Mac side of Blorge provided a quick n’ dirty look at iStat for Mac, a utility that displays real-time stats for your Intel-powered Apple computer’s CPU usage, fans, temperatures, network usage and more—it’s pretty gosh darned neat and free to boot.

Bjango, makers of iStat, has a really cool way to extend that functionality to anywhere you’re connected to the net via an Apple handheld. iStat – Free mem, Sys monitoring (iTunes, $1.99) allows real-time remote monitoring of your Internet-connected Mac, as well as the iPhone or iPod touch in your hand. You will also need to install InStat Server on your Mac, but that’s free and installation is a simplistic and discovery of Mac available for monitoring is brain dead via Bonjour.

IStat’s easy to read, intelligently designed displays put a wealth of information at your fingertips and it’s as live as your bandwidth and latency permit. So, whereas iStat is a highly amusing diversion for this MacBook user who’s Blog is actually served on shared box in an air conditioned room I’ll never visit, in the right hands, Banjango’s is slickly implemented and provides a well of processor, temps, fans, disc, network and other critical information.

For webmasters and sys admins—hooks for monitoring Macminicolo service are built in—having instant access to your servers stats is a bit more than “simply useful” and Bjango’s $2 (a cup of toxic, black java at Burger King) asking price doesn’t even qualify as a pittance. IStat isn’t a management tool per se, but it also doesn’t carrying that price tag either.

And, even if you don’t have a big iron server to monitor or even a colo or two to watch over, it’s kind of a cool little conversation starter at Starbucks or a Metro stop. And, just for giggles, you can monitor your iPhone of iPod touch’s current usage stats, as well.

I’m loving InStat for my Mac and especially digging InStat for iPhone with its remote Mac monitoring functionality. It’s just a cool little app for have around…
