Review: Cell Phone Tracker app monitors iPhone usage
By Michael W. Jones
If you have ever wondered how many minutes you had used on your iPhone this month and did not want to dig through the AT&T wireless site trying to find out, then the Cell Minute Tracker app is for you.
Getting your current available-minutes stats directly from your iPhone makes a lot of sense. At the point where you may become worried about how many of your minutes you have used, or more importantly how many you have left, you almost certainly have your iPhone in your hand. Now, a single touch on the Cell Minute Tracker app icon will instantly get that information for you.
The app was written by Pageonce and will run on both the iPhone and theiPod Touch. It keeps track of all of the basic statistics that you need to have at your fingertips, including:
Anytime minutes usage
Night/weekend minutes usage
Mobil to mobile minutes usage
Rollover minutes usage
Text / IM message usage
Internet / MEdia Net usage
It performs this magic by interfacing directly with the AT&T systems that track your usage, by special arrangement with AT&T. It is not that this information is not available elsewhere; it is. But it is actually sort of cumbersome to look it up on the AT&T Wireless site. This 99-cent app requires just the single app icon touch to run the app and the information appears instantly on your iPhone screen.
When you first download the app, it requires that you fill in your iPhone telephone number and the password for your AT&T Wireless account. You will just have to do that once, unless you want the app to be more secure, in which case there is a setting which allows you to require that the password be entered each time the Cell Minute Tracker app is run.
If that isn’t enough, the app also keeps track of your bill, and will even let you make your payment on line, right from your iPhone. This information is on a second screen that presents your billing information, by category, and notes your previous payment, current balance, and current amount due. A single touch on this screen will take you to the bill payment page on the AT&T site. You do have to do a bit of scrolling and expand the size of the bill payment area of the screen to get the job done, but your connection will be just as secure as it is on your full-sized computer.
This is not a killer app, but it is well designed and serves it’s purpose well. It allows you to track your usage on the run, which is the way most of us lead our lives anyway. And it may keep you from making that one over-the-limit call to Grandma on the last day of your billing period by taking a single glance at how many minutes you have left.
