Verizon, Apple in talks regarding ‘media pad,’ ‘iPhone lite’

By Ronald O Carlson

Some old rumors got a fresh twist and fresh life in the run up to this Summer’s iPhone 3.0 roll out. This is starting to feel like a real cliff hanger and, whatever the outcome, the next few months are going to be very, very interesting.

Spencer E. Ante with BusinessWeek has added fresh fuel to the story that Verizon, which has America’s biggest and most reliable network, and Apple are talking about a hookup as early as this Summer, though the focus of these talks is said to be devices other than the iPhone as we currently know it. According to BusinessWeek:

One device is a smaller, less expensive calling device described by a person who has seen it as an ‘iPhone lite.’ The other is a media pad that would let users listen to music, view photos, and watch high-definition videos, the person says. It would place calls over a Wi-Fi connection. One of these devices may be introduced as early as this Summer…

Gosh, don’t those sound a lot like the iPod touch on steroids and iPhone nano we’ve all heard so much about?

That said, who in their right mind would want to be sitting across the table from Tim Cook and/or Steve Jobs right talking about the iPhone, etc? You’ve gotta love Apple’s sense of drama and theater!

What’s your take?
