Although best known for emergency roadside service, the auto club is also a great source for discounted stuff. From cheap hotel rooms to reduced price professional sports team swag, your AAA card with a little help from your Apple handheld is a great way to save money.

The organization formerly known as the American Automobile Association, now just AAA, has announced the availability of AAA Discounts, a GPS-enabled iPhone application that makes finding AAA Show Your Card & Save discounts.

“In the current economy, it’s more important than ever to take advantage of discount offers wherever they occur,” said Gail Acebes, director of AAA Partnership Programs. “This free, new application is just one more way AAA is helping members save money.”

According to AAA propaganda, their Show Your Card & Save program is the largest member discount program in the world offering more than 160,000 locations for savings worldwide including 110,000 retail locations in North America and popular online retailers including Target.com, FTD.com, The UPS Store, BlueNile.com, Lens Crafters, OfficeMax, Best Western, Sheraton and more.

I’ve been a AAA member for years and regularly make use of the AAA discount at hotels, restaurants and more—if you’re on the stick, membership easily pays for itself even if you never use the roadside service.
