T-Mobile US providing iPhone support

May 7, 2009

From the “life is a beautiful thing” department comes the news that the U.S. branch of T-Mobile, which is Apple’s wireless partner in Germany and Austria, is providing technical support to folks using unlocked iPhones on its network here in America.

We all know that there are millions of people using millions of unlocked iPhones. However, it’s always been assumed that most if not all of those folks were overseas and, regardless of what network they were on, the footloose and fancy-free were strictly on their own. Now, The Consumerist, a consumer rights and advocacy publication, reports that T-Mobile America not only has a few iPhone users on its network, but they also provide support.

Apparently, a recent update caused iPhone users on T-Mobile’s network to experience service outages, be charged for texts that had no content and other issues. According to the Consumerist:

When a system update caused service failures and bugs in T-Mobile customers’ unlocked iPhones, the users emailed T-Mobile to alert them to the issue. Even though T-Mobile doesn’t offer the iPhone, they fixed the bugs and gave the users a service credit for the inconvenience.

Yes, you read that correctly, not only did the carrier acknowledge the problems and fix them, but they also provided users, as noted, with a one-month service credit. Apparently, T-Mobile Europe’s relationship with Apple is also paying dividends for users on this side of the pond.

Yet another reason why the iPhone topped J.D. Power’s smartphone customer satisfaction survey? I doubt it hurt any.

Still does this represent service above and beyond the call of duty? Maybe not, but it’s good to know that the only other iPhone compatible service provider in the US isn’t deaf to users needs. Also, if you’re an iPhone user living in an area with solid or better than T-Mobile coverage, it is also good to know you have more than one choice for service when your standard two year contract comes to an end…

What’s your take?
