For new apps, Apple says, ’3.0 or bust’

May 8, 2009

If there was any doubt about when Cupertino’s iPhone dungeon masters would announce the changeover to iPhone OS 3.0, it has now been firmly laid to rest. Yesterday, at the same time Apple delivered beta 5 of their next generation handheld operating system, the company also laid down the law on compatibility going forward.

By now, the meat and measure of the upcoming public release of Apple’s iPhone OS 3.0 has been well fleshed out. Now, the company has also laid out its iPhone OS 2.x to iPhone OS 3.0 transition policy in this email (via TUAW):

As noted by TUAW, given that iPhone OS 3.0 doesn’t have a published release date and the only installed base coders have to test against is likely in the palm of their sweaty hands, developers really must make a leap of faith and trust that Apple has this operating system transition well in hand (i.e. this is potentially the stuff of disaster)…

What’s your take?
