Get the iPhone direct via online Apple Store
By Ronald O Carlson
One measure of a product’s success is how ubiquitous its distribution is. Thereupon, the iPhone can be seen following in the storied steps of the iPod, which also started small and went global.
A quick check of the Apple Store reveals a “new” inhabitant, the iPhone 3G. There’s nothing particularly special about the listing, which doesn’t include bundled add-ons or reduced.
It’s exactly the same deals—8GB, $199; 16GB, $299—you’ll get just about everywhere else the iPhone 3G is sold.
So, why did the Cupertino, California-based Mac, iPod and smartphone maker wait so long to begin offering one of its premier products and top money makers on its own online store? Even though it has been available since day one at the company’s brick and mortar retail outlets?
Well, perhaps the fact that the online Apple Store is only taking orders from new iPhone customers (ie people don’t already have a relationship with AT&T) should be clue enough.
Sadly, Apple isn’t selling an unlocked version of their handset. Now, that would have been newsworthy…
What’s your take?
