Audiobook 1.0 for iPhone: 1,800 titles ready for download
If you are anything like me, you spend an inordinate amount of time in the car—coming, going and more often than not just sitting, waiting. Whether you’re looking to expand your horizons, learn some new thing or just pleasantly pass the time, audiobooks are a superbly convenient way to pack a little low impact edutainment into your schedule.
Here’s a free way to access an 1,800 volume library encompassing more than 9,800 hours of content—Audiobooks 1.0 for iPhone (iTunes) from Cross Forward Consulting (i.e. the Traveling Classics people).
As apps go, it’s pretty basic, but its goals are modest and delivery is pretty much spot on. Importantly, Audiobooks allows you to download audiobooks directly to your iPod touch or iPhone, meaning your next book is as close as the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot or 3G node.
Features include:
— Download content directly to you device
— Quick start listening as soon as the first chapter is finished downloading
— Browse and search for by author or title
— Simple, easy to use user interface
Because I never get tired of the phrase ‘call me Ishmail’ (also, one of my favorite lines from Laurie Anderson) and because as books go it’s not too big or small, my first Audiobooks download was Moby Dick, which I found and was listening to in about 45 seconds. Yes, the first chapter downloaded and was playing just like that.
Although Audiobooks is advertising supported, the ads take relatively little screen space and are otherwise innocuous. This app isn’t perfect, but it’s free, the book selection impressive and the fast start function is just brilliant.
If you like audiobooks, get Audiobooks and start enjoying thousands of hours of free content.
