Does a 32GB iPhone mean a 64GB iPod touch?
By Ronald O Carlson
The stars have aligned behind an Apple smartphone with twice the capacity, but does that mean the company will share the love across product lines? Assuming there’s anything to rumors of an “iPod touch on steroids” in our collective future, then 64GB might just be one star in a constellation of bigger, faster, better device configurations.
Wired reports that a 32GB iPhone is a sure thing once Apple’s announces revisions to its smartphone product line later this Summer. Specifically, their write up cites pre-release listings of the larger capacity handset T-Mobile Austria and Rogers (Canada), both of which are official iPhone distribution partners in their respective countries.
That said, does a doubling of the iPhone’s capacity mean Apple will offer an iPod touch, which currently maxes out at 32GB, with 64GB of flash storage? Not per se.
Bigger, badder everything
However, if rumors of the eventual release of an iPod touch on steroids—a device (aka Mac touch) with a 7-inch display, fast 802.11n, optional external keyboard, etc—hold any water, then 64GB is likely to be one configuration of several as that’s considered the minimum capacity in the related netbook product segment. That is, it might make sense for Apple to offer 16, 32 and 64 GB standard configurations, with 128GB available as a build-to-order option.
Why? Whether it goes widescreen or not this year, the touch is positioned as a portable gaming and ultra-portable computer platform, meaning storage will increasingly become a key constraint in how people use the device.
Of course, there’s the strong possibility that the touch will get an autofocus camera (link below) that also does video. See where this is heading?
So, at the very least, we should see a 64GB touch this year and here’s hoping predictions that the “Mac touch” (or whatever it’s eventually called) hits the streets in September…
What’s your take?

Yes, there will be a 64GB Touch later this year. It has to do with space vs chip capacity. The comm chips in the iPhone limit the space but the space is left open on the iPod Touch. It’s a given that the Touch memory capacity will double. The double memory capacity also gives the Touch it’s value compared to an iPhone. It’s just what I’ve been waiting for. My two-year old 30GB iPod Video still works just fine now (I just replaced the battery in it since it no longer held a charge) but I would like to hold more music and videos and the 64GB iPod Touch will do the trick. If the Touch has a faster processor, graphics chip and battery life, then it’s a no brainer to buy it.

I certainly hope so. 32GB of storage for an iPod designed for video is a little silly (and so is the $400 price). Just put a HD in there already! (Some of us take care of our electronic toys and don’t need expensive solid state storage – like my 5G iPod w/30GB HD and my 3G iPod w/20GB HD, both of which still function perfectly!) I have to swap video in and out on my 5G now because of a lack of space – so I keep waiting and waiting and waiting for more storage on a iPod Touch with more storage space before I pull the trigger and put myself in more debt. Not worth it otherwise.

A 64GB touch would put the MS ZuneHD on the defensive. Not to mention the rumored 16GB PSP.

I am anxious to hear of Apple releasing a 64GB iPod Touch…not because I want one (yet), but because that means they’re that much closer to releasing one with even MORE storage. I have an 80GB iPod Video, which I love, but it’s almost full (ok, it’d be over-full if I let it upload my complete iTunes library). I see no point in buying a new iPod unless it has more storage capacity than the one I already own. I look forward to having a larger video screen, but am willing to wait for something that will be a true upgrade from my little iPod Video.
