Sims 3: 1.4 million copies sold in first week

June 10, 2009

Even before this hotly anticipated title shipped, there was little doubt it would be a hit. Still, aside the from the product managers who put the necessary units (and their necks) on store shelves, few would have guessed this multi-platform game would go multi-platinum in its first week.

The Associated Press (AOL Entertainment) reports The Sims 3 ($9.99, iTunes) has sold 1.4 million copies, making it the fastest selling computer title in game publisher Electronic Arts’ history — a significant milestone.

Further, the company also said over 7 million user-designed items, including home furnishings, characters and clothing, have been downloaded from the game’s Web site. The Sims is the best selling computer game in history with over 100 million copies sold.

So, those are some pretty nice numbers, but have you played? I’ve sunk a score of hours into Sim City for iPhone, but I’m in no hurry to invest in this latest EA time sink…

What’s your take?
