AdWhirl gets a million in new funding
The start-up that lets iPhone developers get their ads from multiple ad networks, AdWhirl, has received $1 million in seed funding from Foundation Capital to continue development.
AdWhirl was founded just a couple of months ago to give iPhone app developers a way to participate in multiple ad networks at one time. At this point, developers using AdWhirl can get their ads from the AdMob, Jumptap, Quattro Wireless, and Videoegg networks by simply getting their ads directly from AdWhirl. Other networks are scheduled to be added soon, including Millenial Media and Google’s Adsense.
AdWhirl makes life a lot easier for developers. With the number of app ad networks for iPhone apps growing quickly since Apple opened the App Store, developers were having to go to a lot of extra work to keep everything updated as required, according to a TechCrunch story. In the last few months, AdWhirl has had 1,000 app publishers use its services and has been responsible for the delivery of more than 1 billion ads each per month to iPhone and iPod Touch users through advertising placed in free applications.
AdWhirl is available for app developers without charge and allows developers a number of options in how and from where their app ads are delivered. Developers can essentially specify the networks from which they want ads, what the ad rotation is, and how often they would like ads to appear in their apps. They can even set up automatic switching of ads from the various networks to try to get the best mix of ads.
Better, when one network runs out of ads, AdWhirl ensures that an ad from another network is automatically served so that the ad spots in developer’s iPhone apps never go without an ad. It is the best of all possible worlds for the developer, allowing them to insure that they get the best available cost-per-thousand ad rates and the best ads, without every running out of as supply.
Apparently, this is working for the developers of free iPhone apps. The founders of AdWhirl have reported that apps that get into the top 100 free app list stand to make between $400 and $5,000 per day. That translates into between $12,000 and $150,000 per month. Even at the low end of the scale, that is not bad revenue for a “free” application.
