iPhone 3G S OpenGL performance rocks
By Ronald O Carlson
Apple has said their new handset is up to 2.5 times faster than the old one. For once, it looks like Cupertino’s marketing mavens were actually being conservative. Whether you’re benchmarking or just doing a visual comparison, there can be little doubt what the “S” stands for.
Tap Tap Tap, developer of a range of apps for the iPhone and iPod touch that does not include any of the hugely popular Tap Tap Revenge games, is working on a new title and they’ve noticed something amazing—the iPhone 3G S’ performance rocks and not just a little.
“With the newest generation of iPhone, I was expecting Apple to boost the speed to be around iPod touch levels,” John Casasanta, developer, Tap Tap Tap. “But after a couple of days of tinkering with it, I have to say that I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with how much faster it is over the 3G!

The above video, which clearly shows just how superior Apple’s new phone is, was created by Tap Tap Tap collaborator Black Pixel. And, even though the developer says he hasn’t yet optimized Plasma to run on the second generation iPhone, I’m thinking the new version will still kick butt after he does.
This is rather compelling evidence that the iPhone 3G S is at least 2.5 times faster than the last generation model. Furthermore, given that the iPhone 3G S’s processor is said to be underclocked and the iPod touch is positioned and equipped to provide superior performance, I’m really looking forward to the new touch in September — it’s gonna scream!
