iPod touch owners avoiding iPhone OS 3.0 update
By Ronald O Carlson
Although the new operating system has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, the great majority of those Apple’s other handheld computer aren’t seeing the value. Is this a question of too high an asking price or is it that there’s just not enough on offer to be worth the trouble?
AdMob reports that whereas iPhone users have taken to iPhone OS 3.0, with nearly half having already taken the plunge, my fellow iPod touch users would seem to be actively shunning the upgrade, with just 1 percent having installed it.
“Earlier today, Apple announced 6 million downloads of the 3.0 OS that launched last Wednesday,” said AdMob research Mike. “We’ve seen this rapid adoption of 3.0 in our network as well.”
—Are 6 million iPhone OS downloads momentous?
— iPhone OS 3.0: Hands on with the original iPod touch
That’s a huge gulf between the iPhone haves, which get the update for free, and iPod touch have-nots that have to pay $10 for the new operating system. Oddly, Apple’s previous pay-to-play iPhone OS upgrade, version 2, has seen nearly universal adoption on the iPod touch and that didn’t have nearly as much going for it.
Clearly there’s a disconnect between what Apple thinks it’s selling and what users perceive is on the table. Thereupon, this is a huge headache for developers, especially those making games, that hoped to build their business models around new OS features, such as in app purchases.
Apple needs to do something and quick, but what? Perhaps bundling the iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade with a hot game for $9.99 would be just the thing…
What’s your take?

This upgrade kills the Skype app (iPod Touch).
There’s a message: “OS 3.0 does not support Skype.”
No kidding. It disables it.

OS 3 does not kill Skype, I had the same message, but Skype still works.
However I would not advise the upgrade for the price vary little seems to change on the Ipod touch. A few apps stop working and you can cut and past. I have yet to try a Blue tooth headset with it, but I am very disappointed to discover that the headset is the only enabled option for blue tooth. I would say save your money.

I got lured in by the promise of being able to cut & paste (it’s been a pain without it!) and sprung for the $10, but I am regretting it now. A number of the apps I use the most have serious bugs now, and Apple is taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r to approve the updates that have been submitted. My favourite game has been CRIPPLED by the update (Treasures of Montezuma)…

One of the features I was most looking forward to was syncing notes documents back to my mac. even with mobileme, it doesn’t work. email’s still the only option on a 1G touch, which is just lame.

One other problem with OS3 is that I can no longer show a slide show via the video out cable. I am
one unhappy camper. Also I can’t win the Lotto
because my lotto program don’t work.
After being on the phone for almost an hour, they
said to bring the itouch – 1st gen – to the service
center and have them look at it. It better not cost
me anything for that service.

I wanted cut & paste so I spent the 10 bucks but I’m also miffed because Montezuma’s Treasure plays like it’s on an old 286. Fix It!

Back from the service center. The problem with showing pictures via the video out cable was/is that you must start the slide show from the photos icon. You then pick the slide show you want. You must then touch the arrow key. That is the only way the show will start.
A problem was noted that if you stop the slide show on any picture, You can NOT restart the show from that picture. You need to go back to the start to re enable the slide show.
You can manually advance or go back but can not continue the show as you could with OS2.2
I was not the only one with OS3 problems. There was a line outside waiting to get in and get their machines working. Also there was no charge for the visit.

3.0 stinks! Slows down certain apps, disables others and if you do not purchase Apple’s own video out cables for about $50. -US- Vs. $5. on eBay the video gets disabled. What a rip! Apple your becoming a company we can no longer trust!

To WHAT THE FUCK APPLE:
Close iTunes, connect your Ipod touch to the usb cable, press and hold the home key and power button at the same time. Hold them both for 5 seconds even after the connect to itunes screen appears. Then open Itunes. it should give you a message about the iPod being in recovery mode. Click restore. iTunes will download the original software for the phone (probably 2.2.1) and install it. All is fixed. I am having the same problem trying to install 3.0, it just won’t do it.

My take?
Maybe, like me, most iPod Touch users love the look, feel, and sound of their devices, but use them 99% for listening. Maybe, like me, iTunes upgrades have caused them grief as often as they provided enhanced functionality, and they’re tired of going through reinstalls and multi-step remedies to restore functionality. Maybe, like me, they resent Apple’s steady attempts to control how we use our devices. Maybe, now that there’s a price tag attached as well, we’re realizing how much this all reminds us of our experiences with Microsoft.

What gripes my ass big-time with Apple is that once you upgrade, downgrading is impossible. I have tried every trick in the book to get back to 2.21 on my iPod Touch and have failed. I am beginning to smell microsoft rats lurking in the woodwork.

Jim connect your ipod to iTunes and hold shift while you hit the restore button. Allows you to select what file to restore with. My $10 os 3.0 still won’t install this trick at least got me back to 2.21

Looks like I will not be upgrading my OS.

If your ipod touch works don’t get the update. Don’t fix what isn’t broken.
