Apple has said their new handset is up to 2.5 times faster than the old one. For once, it looks like Cupertino’s marketing mavens were actually being conservative. Whether you’re benchmarking or just doing a visual comparison, there can be little doubt what the “S” stands for.

The current killer app for the iPhone would seem to be the voice-based turn-by-turn GPS system, and the most eagerly awaited is from TomTom, though there are others here and on the way.

Apparently Steve’s back at work this fine morning as today’s press release announcing first weekend sales quotes him again for the first time since January. Which is another way of saying that all’s right with the world and the birds are singing as Apple announces higher than expected sales figures for the iPhone 3G S.

Even though Apple and China Unicom, the purported winner of the right to sell the iPhone in the Middle Kingdom, still can’t get it together enough to even issue a press release, Chinese consumers aren’t completely out of luck. Yes, there are hundreds of thousands of iPhones in use there and there a few clones circulating in the market worthy of the name—this article isn’t about one of those.

At the Worldwide Developer Conference there were snorts of derision and jeers each time AT&T’s logo failed to appear among the carriers that had pledged to support the new MMS and tethering functionality in iPhone OS 3.0 at launch. Since the show, the Mac blogsphere has been alive with rumors that Apple’s oft criticized and widely ridiculed U.S. wireless partner would charge egregiously for both services. As of today, those rumors have been mostly, sort of—oh, let’s wait and see—quashed by Ma Bell.

If it’s summer, it must be time for the release of the new iPhone. With the new phone out, it looks like the lines are shorter for the 3GS than they were for the 3G, though people are still flocking.
