iPod 3,1 spotted online

By Ronald O Carlson

A sighting this week all but confirms the existence of the long-rumored, next-generation iPod touch, though it’s size, shape and internals all remain a mystery.

Pinch Media, which bills itself as the number one mobile application analytics solution, was among the first to note the appearance of iPhone 2,1 earlier this year, which was perhaps the first known sighting of the iPhone 3GS. Now, the web metrics company has noted the iPod 3,1 in its logs, which we’re all going to assume is Apple’s next-generation iPod touch and that it will be delivered into our collectively sweaty palms in September.

Here are the scant details available from Pinch about the iPod 3,1:

• the first time an application using Pinch Analytics was run by a ‘iPod 3,1′ device occurred in late April 2009;
• applications using Pinch Analytics were run by ‘iPod 3,1′ devices very infrequently until late May 2009, when the pace picked up slightly;
• As of this date, a few dozen distinct ‘iPod 3,1′ devices have run around two dozen different applications using Pinch Analytics;
• The applications being run on ‘iPod 3,1′ devices have all been the larger, more popular applications using Pinch Analytics, with hundreds of thousands to millions of unique users– other than their size, the applications have little else in common.

Pinch knows and tracks information about applications in use on current and future iPhones and iPods because its software is embedded inside many leading mobile applications, and the company encourages developers to join the fold.

What isn’t known about the Apple’s next-generation iPod touch is its size, shape and internals. It’s widely believed that this year’s revision will mirror in many ways the iPhone 3GS, which offers much faster internals and a reasonably good quality camera and software, though it’s hoped earlier reports of a new, larger tablet will still come true…

What are you hoping Uncle Steve will have for us come September?

    1. Excuse me?:

      I like the artist’s rendition of the dock. It’s very sleek looking but I think it’s unlikely that Apple will come out with something like this because of the following major disadvantage: since that dock has no sides to guide the iPod/iPhone into place, one would have to properly eyeball or jab the iPod around to get the dock connector in place. That would be somewhat of an inelegant solution for Apple.

      What I’d like Apple to develop is a dock that allows the iPod or iPhone to be in landscape or portrait mode. Current docks sold by Apple do not allow for landscape mode. Landscape mode is good for when we are watching movies or even to access cover flow and to use cover flow as a display while the iPod is playing music.

      I find cover flow is useless for music.

      But yes a sideways dock would be nice.
