By Ronald O Carlson

Assuming you’ve five Apple handhelds lying about with nothing better to do, this is just the stuff — a supremely cool waste of time and resources that will guaranty your 15 minutes of fame among the geekerati.

Dvice (via +D Mobile, Japan) brings us the news from Japan of an iPhone “server farm,” the love child of FreeBit. Obviously, these guys have a sublime amounts of excess hardware and free time, which means the rest of us are utterly green with envy at their accomplishment and all the geek cred they’ve earned in the process.

According to +D, “[T]he iPhone server farm prototype houses up to five iPhones and is really just a showcase for the company’s Serversman software.”

Of course, the opening of this article wasn’t just a pointless come on, because FreeBit’s software is of the “free” variety and it supports the iPhone, iPod Touch and Windows Mobile handhelds, allowing the user to rack up your idle devices for network storage, file viewer or mini-web server. So, if you’ve got some iPhone and iPod touch equipped friends, a bit o’ patience and perhaps more than a little time, check this über cool waste of time for yourself.

Dig in and report back with an anecdote or a link or three…
