AT&T selling $49 iPhone refurbs to anyone with the stomach
This is probably going to be the lowest price available to the citizens of this fine country until Apple brings on one or more additional players sometime next year. Until then, this is probably as good as it’s gonna be.
If the record labels and the RIAA, their attack dog umbrella group, had their way, a song would probably go for $49 and that is exactly the price Apple’s exclusive U.S. network partner is selling refurbs for. The online AT&T Store is advertising the 8GB iPhone for $49 and supplies probably won’t last for long.
Who’s your daddy?
According to the Wired article, 10 Gadgets We’d Like to Throw Into a Black Hole:
While not technically a gadget… It’s infuriating enough 3G data speeds are slower than a stunned yak, but AT&T seems to revel in giving its customers less than everyone else. Between crippling some features that became standard on other devices years ago (MMS and tethering) and having notoriously spotty coverage — even in metropolitan areas — it’s a wonder why people would volunteer to sign away two years of their lives on service that borders on barely functional.
Yes, of course, you still have to purchase $30 data and (minimum) $39.99 voice plans. And, yes, basic text messaging will still set you back at least $5 per month with each off-plan missive priced at $0.20 each.
Want to hear another beautiful—AT&T: ‘We’ve been very happy with our pricing’—thought? Protecting your little iPhone toting tykes will set you back $4.99 a month.
That’s right. Parental controls cost an extra five clams a month. Lovely people that lot at AT&T…
What’s your take?

I am still using my 1st gen iPhone and using Edge as a result and it does what I need it to do. Its always as fast as I want, but I get the information I need, often on the golf course, if I want to look at a radar map of where the storms are, I can. If my buddies are bugging me to look up the cricket scores, I can. It works for me, provides me with the information I need. Speed is not everything. I can use it and it works. People with all manner of other phones and Verizon service and what not ask me to look things up, because the iPhone makes it easier.

Here is the kicker with the $49 IPhone…can’t just buy it and use it you have to 1. be eligible for an upgrade or else you have to pay $249 OR 2. pay to get out of your contract and start another OR 3. get an additional line OR 4. get someone to give you their upgrade OR 5. MOVE OVER TO VERIZON AND STICK IT TO ATT

I want an iphone, but am so cheap. I don’t want to pay almost $100/per month to use it.
