Making Faces [aka Power Goo] comes to iPhone, touch

July 30, 2009

Here’s a blast from the past, a product from MetaCreations and its idiosyncratic founder Kai Krouse remade for the new century. Of course, Kai’s gone off to live the pastoral life and MetaCreations has been little more than a name for the last 10 years.

According to this BusinessWeek write up, the MetaTools trademark and a few of the company’s old software titles have been purchased by former CEO John Wilczak. Thereupon, he’s had Power Goo recoded for the iPhone and iPod touch, and is now selling it on the App Store as Making Faces ($2.99, iTunes).

Flying through landscapes of your desire

In addition to Power Goo and Kai’s Power Tools, MetaTools was also known for its 3D synthetic environment creator Bryce, a product that created and defined that product category for a number of years. It was the kind of application where you’d spend much of a day setting up and tweaking a landscape or world, only to let run over night or over the weekend just to see what it looked like…

Like the original Power Goo, Making Faces allows you to do all kinds of fun with peoples faces, or whatever, by pinching, twisting or otherwise just messing with them. As you might expect, this is going to be a lot of fun when applied to your friends and family

Of course, contorting the faces of people like less into images of pure evil—yes, you can give them horns—that show them for what they truly, can be pretty darned fun, as well.

Of special note from MetaTools is the upcoming, to be announced (TBA) Making Faces Funny Photo contest, which will award up to $1,000 to person to delivers the most entertaining image(s). Here again, I’m thinking your brother’s, wife’s, boss’, etc face in the winner’s circle would be quite entertaining or even just letting them know you entered their faces could be quite entertaining.

Although Making Faces will work on either the iPhone or iPod touch, for the time being (there are persistent rumors of a camera equipped touch coming in September), it’s gonna work best on the iPhone and regardless of which device you buy it for you can’t go too wrong for $2.99.
