Facebook 3.0 for iPhone almost done

By Ronald O Carlson

You’ve been hovering around the oven for what seems like a lifetime, the aroma and sight of double-fudge, peanut butter brownies overwhelming your senses. But, when you checked to see if they’re done by sticking a table knife in the middle, the blade came out gooey, so you’re just have to wait a little bit longer.

That’s the current state of Facebook 3.0 for iPhone—almost there, but not quite done.

The Washington Post reports that the people working on the application are just tying up loose ends, localizing perhaps most popular social networking tool on the iPhone for a few more markets.

“The app is pretty much done – we’re just working on translating it into a bunch of languages,” says Facebook developer Joe Hewitt.

Facebook for iPhone 3.0: What’s new and notable*

1. The “new” News Feed
2. Ability to “Like” posts, content, etc
3. Events, including the ability to RSVP
4. Notes
5. Pages
6. Create new photo albums
7. Upload photos to any album
8. Zoom into photos
9. Easier photo tagging
10. Profile Pictures albums
11. A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications
12. Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen
13. Better Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply)
14. Quickly call or text people right from the Friends page
15. Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or are interrupted by a phone call

* This list is a reprint of information provided on July 4

The write up goes on to state that Facebook 3.0 for iPhone will be available shortly, which is a more promising statement than last month’s “this Summer” pledge. However, the standard—”app store censors happen”—caveats apply, which could put the app in our hands any time between next week and, again, September 30.

The currently shipping version for iPhone is Facebook 2.5 and, although lacking the sexy features listed above, is all-in-all quite serviceable.

Looking forward to Facebook 3.0 for iPhone or is the arrival of some other application on your mind?
