iPhone 3.1, MMS to arrive September 9, says AT&T rep

September 1, 2009

A short, unsourced and rather cryptic write up says Ma Bell will keep its promise to deliver multimedia messaging services on the iPhone and the feature will arrive as part of Apple’s next iPhone OS point update. There’s also a user report claiming first hand knowledge, too. The timing’s right, but I’d like stronger confirmation before holding my breath.

From the unknown and unsourced story department, comes news from Know Your Mobile that AT&T will finally roll MMS service on the iPhone, quoting an “announcement” from a company representative. Further, we can expect this functionality to be delivered as part of iPhone OS 3.1, an important update that’s been expected for months now already.

The report goes on to speculate that Bluetooth file transfer functionality might also be activated in this release of the OS, though there’s no mention of tethering support, another feature that AT&T has variously promised but consistently failed to deliver.

Inciting the faithful…

Further, Know Your Mobile references a Funky Space reader report from August 3 as further evidence that MMS is finally arriving.

Again, although the timing’s right for AT&T to deliver MMS, Bluetooth file transfer and tethering support — hell, why not give iPhone subscribers network reliability, too? — there needs to be better confirmation than these thin, unsourced write ups. Call me 10 times bitten and getting more cynical daily…

Whats’ your take?

Your source may have something. Here’s a clue; on AT&T’s wireless.att.com website when I check my iPhone bill there’s a section for data usage. It now has these categories:
    Text/IM Messaging
    Multi-Media Messaging
    Video Share Calling
    Internet/MEdia Net
    Video Exchange

Presently only two of the five above are functioning; Text/IM Messaging and Internet/MEdia Net.

So I think that’s a pretty big clue however, I don’t know how long this pull down menu has had all these categories. I noticed them about a week ago.

Had a strong feeling that it will come out September 9. Finally getting closer. But what does Bluetooth file transfer have to do with AT&T? I don’t think Bluetooth has anything to do with a carriers network.

  3. Aklrt:

Well, some of the other websites are now saying the release of MMS by AT&T is being delayed until September 25th. I wonder what the real date is? I guess we will know tomorrow.

  4. Angela:

I have my fingers crossed for tomorrow, but this is the only time I have heard anything of it. I won’t hold my breath. I can only tell you that I hope it is soon because I am getting tired of waiting. As are we all.
