iPhone MMS: AT&T commits to September 25 roll out
When Ma Bell announced that it would launch multimedia messaging, which allows users to send instant messages with image and video files attached, by late Summer 2009, most of us assumed they would just manage to squeeze in under the wire. Well, the Fall equinox occurs on Sept. 22 this year, three days before the wireless carrier will get it together — close enough?
SFGate.com reports that AT&T has announced that MMS will be available on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS on Sept. 25, which is three days after Summer officially ends but within the realm of truthfulness for corporate marketing types.
As we all know, unlike most of Apple’s wireless partners worldwide, AT&T held back MMS availability on the iPhone, a service that’s available on other smartphones sold by the company, because it needed to finalize system upgrades. Given that the carrier is perpetually overwhelmed by iPhone users and their ravenous need for bandwidth, their desire for a delay is understandable.
Nevertheless, if this delay leads to yet another round of more of the same — unreliable connectivity and slow speeds — I imagine there will be a full blown subscriber revolt…
What’s your take?
