iPhone OS 3.1[.1]: What’s inside this major update
By Ronald O Carlson
This dot-fix is 90 percent about making your iPhone or iPod touch play nicely with the changes with iTunes and the iTunes Store. Therein, the feature that makes me grin deviantly is the ability to manage apps on my Mac, which is simply sweet given the big Swedish hands I inherited (didn’t get the ears, though).
For those keeping score at home, Apple now has separate landing pages for the iPhone OS 3.1 Update and iPod touch software update (v3.1.1).
iPhone OS 3.1.1 update contains bug fixes and improvements including the following:
• Genius recommendations for apps
• iTunes 9 support
– Genius mixes
– Organize your apps directly in iTunes
– Improved syncing options for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts and photos
– iTunes U content organization
• Redeem iTunes Gift cards, codes and certificates in the App Store
• Display available iTunes account credits in App Store and iTunes Store
• Remotely lock iPod touch with a passcode via MobileMe
• Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
• Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
• Fixes issue that caused app icons to display incorrectlyRecommended for all iPod touch models and weighs — it’s the whole OS — a chunky, chunky 264.9MB.
Phoning it in
For iPhone users, in addition to the above, the other “big” feature is the ability to buy ringtones directly without first going through iTunes, though I don’t understand why anyone would want to pay $1.29 to the “sued dead grandmothers” record labels for a snippet of song. Do it yourself!.
For those of you into off-label uses of your Apple handheld, this update breaks jailbreaking. However, if better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on has been on your mind, you’ll want to install this patch.
iPhone OS 3.1.1 is available for free to all iPhone and iPod touch with version 3.0 already installed.

Another miss with 3.1.1 was that it doesn’t fix bluetooth controls. You can pause/play with your wireless headphones but the next/previous buttons still don’t work.

I noticed when I downloaded 3.0 my iPhone 3G was slower but since 3.1 appears to be back to what it was prior to 3.0 Has anyone else found the same?
