iPhone OS 3.1: MobileMe services get tweaked, too
By Ronald O Carlson
Apple’s pay-to-play online services suite offers unmatched services and, of course, the company’s creamy smooth “it just works” design and user aesthetic. Increasingly, MobileMe is the cloud-based glue that holds together the Cupertino, California-based Mac, iPod and iPhone maker’s wide-ranging products and services.
As you might expect, last week’s big iTunes and iPod announcements have everyone talking. Less remarked have been the changes Apple’s implemented in MobileMe to lace all of these features and services together.
Thereupon, look no further than the KnowledgeBase Article HT3794 for the straight dope straight from 1 Infinite Loop, which can be lumped into three groups:
Find My iPhone
• Ability to remotely set a passcode lock for an iPhone/iPod touch.
• When selecting the “play a sound” option with Display a Message, the sound is played at the loudest volume, not at the volume of the ringer.
• When enabling Find My iPhone, if Fetch New Data is set to Manual, users are warned that Find My iPhone will not work.Calendar and Bookmark Sync
• Subscribed calendars in iCal now automatically sync with iPhone and iPod touch. Learn more.
• When setting up a MobileMe account on an iPhone or iPod touch, Bookmarks can now be merged with existing Bookmarks on the device.MobileMe Gallery
• Resolves an issue that prevented some MobileMe members from publishing pictures or movies to their MobileMe Gallery from an iPhone or iPod touch due to entering a username with uppercase characters.
To take advantage of these new and improved connectivity features and services, you will of course need a $99 MobileMe account — available from Amazon for $65.99 — as well as Snow Leopard and a fully updated iPhone or iPod touch, which means iPhone OS 3.1[.1].
There’s been a lot to digest over the last week. Of Apple’s new hardware, software and services, which do you find the most exciting and the biggest disappointments? Certainly the cameraless iPod touch tops everyone’s list of let downs…
What’s your take?
