There is a smartphone race going on in China, with a prize of winning the lion’s share of the largest cell phone market in the world. The app, with Apple’s App Store as a model, may be a big part of that battle.

A short, unsourced and rather cryptic write up says Ma Bell will keep its promise to deliver multimedia messaging services on the iPhone and the feature will arrive as part of Apple’s next iPhone OS point update. There’s also a user report claiming first hand knowledge, too. The timing’s right, but I’d like stronger confirmation before holding my breath.

At least one iPhone analyst sees signs in Apple’s operations of today that operations in the future will not include exclusive iPhone deals for any wireless carrier, ans especially not in the U.S.
