Google Maps for iPhone now serving ads
By Ronald O Carlson
Maybe this was all part of the plan from the beginning. With the news that Apple’s purchased a mapping service competitor — that some say is greatly superior — perhaps Google’s trying to squeeze a little revenue out their relationship Apple iPhone relationship before they get shown the door.
über gizmo brings the somewhat surprising news that Google Maps for iPhone and iPod touch application is now serving ads.
It’s not big surprise, especially since advertising is a big business for Google. The good news is that the ads don’t seem to obtrusive, so is you take into account that you’re getting a great free service, a few ads won’t hurt you, right?
In general, tastefully blended ads that aren’t up in your face are palatable — Google’s gotta eat just like everyone else — so I don’t see this as a big deal. That is, I assume these ads have been part of the plan for Google Maps for iPhone from day one.
Still, given the timing of the ads appearance, less than a week after it became know that Apple purchased PlaceBase, widely described as superior to Google Maps, it certainly seems a little suspicious. Yes, more than likely a coincidence, a tad fishy nonetheless…
What’s your take?
