Three strikes and they’re out? Tunes 9.0.2 kills Pre syncing
By Ronald O Carlson
Palm said, “Tit,” and now Apple’s answered with a cursory “tat.” The ongoing war between the two companies over iTunes syncing rumbles on with neither side apparently willing the concede let alone play nicely with the other.
AllThingsD reports that with the release of iTunes 9.0.2 (Mac, Windows (64 bit)) Apple has once again broken iTunes to Palm Pre syncing, which the upstart had re-instated with the release of WebOS 1.2.1 earlier this month.
In Knowledge Base Article HT3642, which was issued on June 16th earlier this year, the mothership offered the following vis-a-vis the syncing of third-party devices (i.e. Pre) with iTunes:
Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.
This is the third time Apple has broken iTunes to Pre syncing. Will it stay broken? Well, if their previous pattern holds, Palm will re-enable syncing in about a week’s time.
Thereupon, I imagine that when the U.S. Justice Department wakes up to the fact that the Apple’s iTunes + iPod + iPhone monopoly is entrenched and durable, the government will get involved. So, should Cupertino bite the bullet and give in on this issue, opting instead to license third-party syncing (i.e. “Works with iTunes” for $10 per device)?
