Were you hoping Apple’s exclusive wireless partner would relent and allow the iPhone to be used as a modem on its 3G network? Unfortunately, Ma Bell is still afraid, and fearful enough to say so publicly, that their network won’t be able to stand the strain of data hog iPhone users double dipping to surf the web on their laptops.

The new ad from Verizon, aimed squarely at highlighting the shoddy service provided by AT&T to iPhone users, could be seen as a public bid to wrest Apple’s business away from AT&T.

From a theoretical perspective, today’s announcement is good news and establishes a level of network openness that should have been standard from the beginning. Realistically, however, it’s hard to image that letting Skype and Google Voice run roughshod over Ma Bell’s strained-to-the-point-of-buckling 3G network will improve service or reliability.

Before the end of 2009, the San Jose, CA-based imaging software giant will release Flash Pro CS5, allowing developers to create rich, interactive applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch — the same crap that chokes and crashes your computer today. Thereupon, given that 80,000 of the 85,000-plus apps already available on the App Store might charitably be described as “junk,” what chaos will the Flash developer community — millions of coders — reek on on the platform?

While the Google Voice iPhone app continues to be hung up in the App Store approval process, Apple has approved yet another app which is similar in function to the Google product.

Maybe this was all part of the plan from the beginning. With the news that Apple’s purchased a mapping service competitor — that some say is greatly superior — perhaps Google’s trying to squeeze a little revenue out their relationship Apple iPhone relationship before they get shown the door.

When WebOS 1.2 arrived without an iTunes 9 sync fix or work around, pretty much everyone assumed Palm had given up their quixotic effort to restore syncing with Apple’s industry leading jukebox software. And, honestly, who could blame them. Well, what a difference a point update can make.

Users find that the iPhone gives them an excellent user experience, and they tend to rank it highly in surveys, though they almost universally dislike the service provided by AT&T.

One hapless Big Apple iPhone user went to the Apple Store Genius Bar to see if something was wrong with his phone after experiencing a lot of dropped calls — AT&T said everything was good on their end — only to be told more than one-in-five of his calls were being dropped. Imagine his surprise when the Genius helping him said on average iPhone users in Gotham were fairing even worse than he.
